SELF AS A COUNSELOR
As I sit and think back at why I chose the field of School Counseling one thought continues to pop into my head. I constantly feel the desire to help others that may be struggling with things in their lives. As I grew up and had to handle situations and make my own decisions, I realize I may have made different decisions that I make today. I wonder if somebody like a counselor could have helped me make thought out decisions. So I feel the real reason I want to be a school counselor is that the students need me. I need to give the students a voice and someone to back them up when needed. Adults constantly come to a cross road in their life and make decisions based on experience. Students do not have the ability to make decisions based on experience and are not usually allowed to relive themselves of difficult situations. These situations lead me to say that they need me to be their advocate. As we all know childhood is not simply a time of growing up, however; these are times for young people to confront difficult tasks.
As a school counselor I would assist children with developmental strategies to help them along before outside sources overcome them. Helping students cope with school and things that may happen in their lives could encourage students to participate more in school. The most positive thing I could do for these students is to be a strong role model. School counselors serve in this capacity because many of them do not have positive people in their lives and if I could just be one positive person I am making a difference. As soon as I become a positive figure in a student’s life I believe I can assist with their educational, emotional, and development well-being in the direction of a healthier future.
My strengths that I bring to the counseling profession is that I have a calm and welcoming demeanor. I am a person who is welcoming which allows people comfortable to talk to me. Being welcoming requires me to be a good listener and someone who gives advice when asked but most importantly I am a problem solver. If someone comes to me with a problem I will find ways to help them fix the problems that would be beneficial to them. I am no means a perfectionist but I am very organized; even though it does not always look like it I have my own way of being organized.
I feel very competent when it comes to being a school counselor; I know there are areas of improvement. An area where I believe I could improve is reaching the student who has very high expectations of themselves academically; so much that it may be wearing them thin on the personal/social aspect of their life. I need to learn to help them find a balance of school and personal needs. As I start working with students as a counselor I will improve on this area. I fully believe people need to be themselves as long as it makes them happy and healthy.
